The most popular acids and their effect on the skin

A good grasp of the skincare products acids and their impact on skin helps you quickly identify the ideal treatment for skin issues. Breaking down connections between cells in the skin's outer layer is the way most cosmetics acids promote skin exfoliation. The skin's topmost layer undergoes renewal, consequently. Cosmetic acids are classified into two groups - AHA and BHA.

Cosmetic products can be beneficial for improving skin's look and texture by containing acids. Dead skin cells can be removed and skin renewal stimulated with the use of AHA (alpha-hydroxy) family acids. These gentle chemical exfoliants are made using natural sources like milk and fruit sugar. Anti-aging products often contain acids which are frequently used for fine lines and skin tone irregularities. Cosmetic products may contain glycolic acid and lactic acid as AHAs. BHA (beta-hidroksi) acids like salicylic acids, possess the unique quality of deeply penetrating the skin's pores and eliminating impurities collected in the sebaceous glands.

Azelaic, lactic, glycolic and salicylic acids are mostly found in cosmetic products. But do you know how they affect the skin?

Lactic acid

Lactic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), is a well-known skin exfoliator that also brightens the skin. Compared to other AHAs, such as glycolic and mandelic acid, lactic acid is unique in its ability to restore the natural moisturizing factor of the skin, making it an excellent moisturizer. This acid is gentle enough for sensitive skin.

Glycolic acid

Glycolic acid, another AHA, has a small molecular weight that allows it to penetrate deeper into the skin layers. It is widely used in anti-aging products due to its ability to stimulate collagen production. However, if you have sensitive skin, it is recommended to start with lower concentrations.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), is oil-soluble and can penetrate pores. This makes it an effective ingredient in cosmetic products for acne-prone skin. In addition, it reduces the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and has anti-inflammatory properties. It is best to use salicylic acid before moisturizer in the evening. If using BHA and vitamin C products, it is recommended to use vitamin C in the morning and BHA in the evening.

Azelaic acid

Azelaic acid is not an AHA or BHA acid, but it is a popular ingredient in cosmetic products due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It is suitable for skin conditions such as rosacea, acne, and hyperpigmentation. Azelaic acid is a tyrosinase inhibitor that reduces redness, swelling, and lightens pigmentation.
