Pigmentation is a skin condition caused by increased production of the skin pigment melanin in specialized cells called melanocytes. The process of pigmentation is related to exposure to harmful sunlight and other factors such as hormonal changes, genetics, age, and also to certain skin conditions such as skin damage, burns or acne.

There are many different types of pigmentation, each of which can have different causes and symptoms. The most common types of pigmentation are:

  • Hyperpigmentation: This is a condition where the skin cells produce too much of the pigment melanin, resulting in dark spots on the skin.
  • Hypopigmentation: This is a condition where skin cells produce too little pigment, resulting in white or light patches on the skin.
  • Lentigo: This is the formation of small, dark spots on the skin and is usually associated with exposure to sunlight.
  • Melasma: This is a pigmentation disorder that usually occurs in women after childbirth or menopause and due to hormonal changes in the body.
  • Vitiligo: This is a condition where the body begins to destroy the specialized skin cells called melanocytes, resulting in white patches on the skin.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: This is a pigmentation disorder that occurs after an injury to the skin, such as acne or scarring.

In the case of hyperpigmentation, lentigo, melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, it is recommended to use cosmetic products that inhibit melanin production in melanocytes or melanin transport from melanocytes to keratinocytes (reference to niacinamide serum) and lighten existing pigment spots (reference to BLOG or vitamin C serum).
